What To Do

  • If you’re able to do so, get uninjured passengers and yourself out of the vehicle as safely as possible. It’s important to stay to the side of the road and away from oncoming traffic.
  • Call the police right away.
  • If anyone is injured, call for an ambulance.
  • Leave your reflectors at least 300 feet toward oncoming traffic so that other drivers are prepared to slow down.
  • Exchange contact information with witnesses and the other drivers involved in the accident.
  • If your vehicle is inoperable, have it towed to your auto shop or the nearest one.
  • Following the crash, report the accident to your insurance agent or company within 24 hours.
  • If you have over $1,000 in damages, report the accident to the DMV.

What Not To Do

  • Don’t make statements regarding the accident to anyone else other than the police.
  • Don’t accept any informal settlements.
